Local governments must have a good maintenance program in place covering vehicles and mechanical equipment at POTWs. Local governments are responsible for maintaining plant vehicles according to the operations described in Section III.G, and also for maintaining equipment at the POTWs. Mechanical maintenance of equipment is of prime importance as equipment must be kept in good operating condition in order for the plant to maintain peak performance. Most POTWs maintain an onsite spare parts inventory. Many large plants have fully equipped machine shops staffed by competent mechanics. But for smaller plants, adequate machine shop facilities often can be found in the community. In addition, most pump manufacturers maintain pump repair departments where pumps can be fully reconditioned.
Vehicle fueling can occur onsite at the POTW or at a vehicle fueling station operated by the local government. These activities and their applicable regulations are described in Section III.G.
